NEW MELONES RESERVOIR Big news was the 43.19-pound limit landed during Saturday's Angler's Choice tournament with a large fish of over 14 pounds. These fish must have been picked off of the beds since the remaining limits in this small tourney dropped dramatically. Bass are moving toward post-spawn, and they are holding around structure with submerged wood at 5 to 20 feet and hitting white/chartreuse spinnerbaits, River2Sea S-Wavers, jigs, Senkos or 6-inch plastics. Trout are in the main lake and upriver at 15 to 30 feet, deeper as the weather warms with small, bright-colored lures behind small dodgers or Sling Blades. Boaters should continue to move into creek arms where there is running water. Bank anglers continue to find the best action under the Highway 49 Stevenot Bridge or the south side of the lake with a long leader or a sliding bobber setup. Guide Danny Layne reported kokanee salmon are showing at very shallow depths from the mouth of Coyote and Carson creek arms, the dam pocket, and in the spillway with fish holding from the surface to 30 feet hitting pink or orange Glitterbug Hoochies, Uncle Larry's Spinners and Vance's Sockeye Slammers. The Fantazia family of Modesto found mixed limits last week including kokanee, rainbows and a brown trout while trolling off the spillway with Layne. Crappie are found in Bear Cove and Coyote Creek with medium minnows or minijigs. Catfishing is best next to creeks or run-off areas with night crawlers, sardines, or anchovy fillets. SAN LUIS RESERVOIR / O'NEILL FOREBAY Ly Tu of Ly's Fishing Goods in San Jose said striper fishing is "hit or miss" with the lake filled to capacity. Merritt Gilbert of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis said anglers are tossing white flukes or Lucky Craft 128s in American shad or ghost minnow for small stripers from the banks around Dinosaur Point. In the Forebay, limits of stripers to 22 inches are the rule with blood worms or frozen shad under the bridge. Call: Ly's Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644; Coyote Bait and Tackle (408) 463-0711;
